LaTeX: update '\leftmark' automatically on '\chapter* {abc123}'. In my current document there are some chapters that have to be added with the \chapter* -command because I don't want them to be real chapters (no entry in toc, no chapter-number,). This works fine I managed to remove the chapter word and number from my file with the commands you gave : \renewcommand{\chaptername}{} \renewcommand{\thechapter}{} But I would like to create titles manually for each of my chapter. So is it possible to remove also the name of the chapter (for example Introduction) at the beginning of it, but with keeping the name of the chapter written in small at the top of the other pages of the chapter, as well as the number of the chapter (that has disappeared because. If you use \chapter{Introduction}, You should be able to do this: \titleformat{\chapter}[display]{\normalfont\bfseries}{\thechapter}{0pt}{\Large} And if you want them on the same line with a bit of spacing try: \titleformat{\chapter}{\normalfont\bfseries}{\thechapter}{1em}{\Large} i.e. without the [display] bit and with 1em spacin

Which I assume is magically added into it when the chaptermark is requested, because if there is a command that gives the ACTUAL chapter title, the internet sure as heck isn't telling me what that command is =(- Mike Kamerman without section page one number name leftmark fancyhdr customize color chapter change latex header footer Wie umranden Sie Text in LaTeX-Tabellen?

One subject area with a quite unambiguous definition -- at least in my opinion -- are headings or, as the LaTeX Companion calls them, sectioning commands. This area is about \part, \chapter, \section, \subsection & friends. (Even about \paragraph, although this is exhibit no. 1 for LaTeX macro name capable of being misunderstood. Instead of using an unnumbered chapter, we'll create a new .tex file, customise the layout and then input it. At the top of this file we need to change the page style to plain in order to stop the headers being added in. Now in a similar way to the title page we'll add in some custom titles and then the abstract text I am using both \leftmark, which is working fine putting the chapter names on the header, and \rightmark, which is giving me a problem: it does put the section names in, as it should, but it adds a dot to the left. Solution. LaTeX maintains internal counters named as chapter and section that hold the chapter and section number. The value in the chapter counter is zero at the beginning of the document. The value in the section counter is zero at the beginning of every chapter.
